Importance of Menstrual Health & Hygiene

Importance of Menstrual Health & Hygiene

As part of our mission to support girls in Africa, so they can complete their education, we have committed to their “MHH”, Menstrual Health and Hygiene. Since starting PridePads Africa we have become acutely aware of the importance of MMH for the future success of girls in rural areas.

More than 300 million women around the world are menstruating at any given moment, yet menstruation is still considered taboo in much of the world. This taboo contributes to lack of awareness and support for MHH. Poor MHH can cause serious health issues including reproductive and urinary tract infections which may result in future fertility and birth complications.

Girls in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are overwhelmingly under- and mis-informed about menstruation prior to their first period. Receiving formal, medically accurate menstruation education being the exception rather than the rule allows these harmful beliefs and practices to continue.

At PridePads Africa, we use a three-pronged approach to create sustainable change.

  • Menstrual Health Education. Our team conducts outreach sessions on the importance of menstrual health and hygiene at local schools and community groups.
  • Free Menstrual Pads. During outreach sessions, participants are given PridePads free of charge.
  • Economic Empowerment. We currently employ eight Cameroonian women who produce the pads and run the education seminars.

  • At PridePads Africa, we believe all students should be able to complete their education and have better economic opportunities in life without worrying about their periods
